Natural Herb Kratom May Have Therapeutic Effects And Relatively Low Potential For Abuse Or Harm, According To A User Survey

Survery of Adult Kratom Users in the U.S. from Johns Hopkins

02/03/2020

Using results of a survey of more than 2,700 self-reported users of the herbal supplement kratom, sold online and in smoke shops around the U.S., Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers conclude that the psychoactive compound somewhat similar to opioids likely has a lower rate of harm than prescription opioids for treating pain, anxiety, depression and addiction.

In a report on the findings, published in the Feb. 3 issue of Drug and Alcohol Dependence, the researchers caution that while self-reporting surveys aren’t always entirely reliable, they confirmed that kratom is not regulated or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and that scientific studies have not been done to formally establish safety and benefits. They say that U.S. drug agencies should seek to study and regulate rather than ban kratom sales outright because of its seemingly safe therapeutic potential, and as a possible alternative to opioid use.

The American Kratom Association (AKA), a consumer advocacy group, estimates that 10-16 million people in the U.S. regularly use kratom by either eating its ground leaves in food or brewing them in tea. Kratom is a tropical plant related to coffee trees, and grown mainly in Southeast Asia. It contains a chemical called mitragynine, an alkaloid that acts on the brain opiate receptors and alters mood. In Asia, where use has long been widespread, people use it in small doses as an energy and mood booster, similar to coffee use in the West. They use larger amounts for pain, or recreationally like beer and wine.

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/natural-herb-kratom-may-have-therapeutic-effects-and-relatively-low-potential-for-abuse-or-harm-according-to-a-user-survey

Kratom products are unregulated and nonstandardized, and reports — although sparse — have linked its use to hallucinations, seizures and liver damage, when combined with alcohol or other drugs. In 2016, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) proposed banning commercial sale and use, and the FDA has advised categorizing it as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no proven medical application and has a high risk of abuse. These agencies were met with public and supplement industry pushback, and no action was taken. A salmonella contamination outbreak in 2018 among users increased concerns.

However, says Albert Garcia-Romeu, Ph.D., instructor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the new survey findings “suggest that kratom doesn’t belong in the category of a Schedule I drug, because there seems to be relatively low rate of abuse potential, and there may be medical applications to explore, including as a possible treatment for pain and opioid use disorder.”

“There has been a bit of fearmongering,” he adds, “because kratom is opioidlike, and because of the toll of our current opioid epidemic.”

A 2015 study in Thailand that reported that people in Asia have been using kratom successfully to treat opioid addiction for decades renewed interest among researchers in the U.S.

For the current survey, Garcia-Romeu says, he and his team enrolled 2,798 people to complete an online survey on their use of kratom. They recruited participants online and through social media, as well as through the AKA. Overall, users were mostly white, educated and middle-aged. Some 61% of users were women, and 90% were white. About 6% reported being multiracial, 1.5% reported being Native American or Hawaiian, 0.5% reported being Asian and 0.4% said they were African American. Participants were an average age of 40. About 84% of participants reported having at least some college education.

Of these participants, 91% reported taking kratom to alleviate pain on average a couple times a day for back, shoulder and knee pain, 67% for anxiety and 65% for depression. About 41% of survey responders said they took kratom to treat opioid withdrawal, and of those people who took it for opioid withdrawal, 35% reported going more than a year without taking prescription opioids or heroin.

As part of the survey, participants completed a Substance Use Disorder Symptom checklist to assess whether their use qualified as a substance use disorder according to the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition guidelines. Fewer than 3% of responses met the criteria for moderate or severe substance use disorder for abusing kratom, but about 13% met some criteria for kratom-related substance use disorder. This is comparable to about 8%–12% of people prescribed opioid medications who became dependent, according to statistics from the U.S. National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA).

“Both prescription and illicit opioids carry the risk of lethal overdose as evidenced by the more than 47,000 opioid overdose deaths in the U.S. in 2017,” says Garcia-Romeu. “Notably there’s been fewer than 100 kratom-related deaths reported in a comparable period, and most of these involved mixing with other drugs or in combination with preexisting health conditions.”

A third of the survey participants reported having mild unpleasant side effects from kratom, such as constipation, upset stomach or lethargy, which mostly resolved within a day. Only 1.9% reported that side effects were severe enough for them to seek medical treatment, such as feeling withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, depression or insomnia when the kratom wore off. Fewer than 10% of participants reported notable kratom-related withdrawal symptoms.

“Although our findings show kratom to be relatively safe according to these self-reports, unregulated medicinal supplements raise concerns with respect to contamination or higher doses of the active chemicals, which could increase negative side effects and harmful responses,” says Garcia-Romeu. “This is why we advocate for the FDA to regulate kratom, which would require testing for impurities and maintaining safe levels of the active chemicals. Otherwise, unregulated products run the risk of unsafe additives and dosing problems, which could be like getting a shot of grain alcohol when you were trying to order a beer.”

Garcia-Romeu adds that data is scant on whether one can overdose on kratom alone, or how it interacts with alcohol or other drugs. The researchers also say rigorous clinical research needs to be done to test kratom for its potential therapeutic benefits, for behavioral intoxication effects and adverse side effects to further help inform government policy and regulation. They also suggest that people err on the side of caution and not mix kratom with any other drugs or medications, and to always talk with their health care provider before taking any supplement.

Aside from Garcia-Romeu, authors on the study include David Cox, Kelly Dunn and Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins and Kirsten Smith of NIDA.

Support for this study was provided in part by grants from NIDA (R01DA003889 and R01DA035246).

Customer Fresh American Kratom Review – Jcole20: User Thank you. I ordered 30 fresh leaves and am very happy with what came in the mail. A few extra were thrown in either accidentally or to make up for some smaller ones in the batch but regardless more than happy. As someone who eats / makes tea with approximately 5-10g per dose approximately 4-5 leaves chewed the traditional way (vein removed and tucked in cheek) has been enough to equal this. Taste is a lot better fresh too. This is what to expect as far as size.

Customer Fresh American Kratom Review

I will give it a shot in the am. I’m well aware of the science behind it and the inhibition of the enzyme (cyp2d6) that breaks mytrag down, that same enzyme is used to break down a lot of different medications and it’s why so many different medicines warn against drinking gpfj prior to taking but I’ve never done it because I used to doubt it’s efficacy and gpfj isn’t the greatest thing (taste Wise) to me but I’ll definitely try it soon.

How much gpfj do you recommend? Honestly I’m not a fan of gpfj but I’ll try it and let you know. I do think I tried it once years back but didn’t put enough time between the medication and the gpfj. Regardless I’ll try it in the morning prior to my morning routine. Btw I’d guess my dose of leaves on average day will be approximately 10-15 leaves.

This is just a guess because today was not very average given I’m conserving because it got here so late. 2 definitely stops withdrawals which says a lot to me and 4 seems to be a decent dose for me as I’ve eaten 7 and don’t feel any different than I did with 4.

Customer Fresh American Kratom Review

I really feel like I hit a ceiling with kratom where more is not helping. I’ll definitely let you know about the gpfj. Idk if that is just me or if it’s because of my tolerance to opioids but regardless I wish someone had told me about that wall earlier because it’s generally atypical with opioids. For me it’s a good thing because in my head it seems so much simpler to taper from 4 leaves 3x daily than 10 capsules-12 capsules 3x daily. Maybe that’s just me but all around I much prefer the fresh kratom to dried.

Try Organic American Kratom Leaf! Click HERE!

I think potency is close but drinking that much powdered kratom gets old and constantly doing the teas do too for me. I find it odd the little caveats with kratom where switching strain for some reduces tolerance. This is something I noticed myself accidentally. Didn’t consider it I just went for what had the highest 7-hm in lab tests not even considering other non isolated alkaloids. I really don’t know as much science behind kratom as I normally would with something like this because I know there’s more to it than just the known alkaloids.

Either by way of how they act or another non isolated alkaloid because kratom stops withdrawals where other stronger opioids do not. So for me I know something else is at play either due to a lack of understanding or other non isolated or not as well talked about alkaloids. I could be wrong and imagined all of it but I really don’t think so. I know myself well and when I took kratom I really didn’t have any faith in it working. It showed me.

At the end of the day kratom does what I want it to and it’s been nothing but beneficial for me. Outside of the fact I don’t have a tree in my backyard I think it’s a wonderful plant and you all are doing an awesome job providing fresh kratom in the us market. I’ll message you and do the review I’ve been jumping between texts and this app.

Trying Grape Fruit Juice

so I tried the gpfj and didn’t notice much of a difference tbh. I drank maybe 24oz an hour before taking 4 leaves then 3 more 45 minutes later. I’ve been reading about it and coincidentally kratom alone inhibits many of the enzymes that break mytrag and the other alkaloids down. Meaning kratom potentiates itself. In theory redosing say 2g every hour should be stronger than taking approx  18.5g at once over a 12hr period. This is taking into account the half life of kratoms alkaloids.

I’m also reading where people say the active alkaloids aren’t water soluble they’re fat soluble so (a big misconception is that insoluble means that it is totally insoluble and none is absorbed which is not true. Insoluble really means it is poorly soluble usually requiring more time and water+heat or/and an acid to bring it out) in theory adding butter (I know how that sounds) or anything high in fat should greatly increase the absorption.

I think adding an acid and melted butter prior to making tea (let it sit for 30 minutes) and then making tea normally should help to bring the alkaloids out. More is better here with the fat but drinking butter tea doesn’t sound good. I don’t think gpfj is useless but unlike with most opioids the effects will not be as pronounced in theory. It may increase duration sightly but I don’t think it will greatly impact effects overall. I also think making tea with a material as fine as possible is best as that allows more surface area to be impacted.

Customer Fresh American Kratom Review.

Try Organic American Kratom Leaf! Click HERE!

I’m going to give the above a shot and I’ll let you know. I tried a tea with whole leaves and was shocked at how light the color was. Totally different than shredded material. Definitely grind your leaves finely for the most material to be absorbed. Also given the poor water solubility of the alkaloids more water is better and in theory the longer the better as long as you can control heat. I’ve tried looking for people who take leaves and soak them for a day vs the 20-30 min tea times. I’d imagine with agitation the soak would pull more alkaloids out.

But that’s all just guessing. This whole post is really just theory but it’s sound theory if anyone has experience with any of the above please let me know. Good luck and hopefully kratom brownies don’t become a thing. I really don’t think those would be pleasantCustomer Fresh American Kratom Review

Approximately 5g equivalent dried kratom and gpfj @1225 added butter at 1230 1tbsp real butter

Looks horrible not gonna lie.

Added 1 3/4 cups of water at 1240 and placed on low heat

just pulled it off I let it simmer lightly for the full 20 minutes and it’s cooling now. Only difference in prep is that it’s harder to cool with the butter. I don’t really know how much a full boil effects it so I’m doing my best to keep it at a simmer. It’ll be another 30 minutes before I try it I’m thinking. Will post more pics here shortly.

After simmer removed at 1310 (30 min – 20 min simmer)

Traveling across the USA with a Kratom Tree

Traveling across the USA with a Kratom Tree  – Our lush Kratom cuttings come from our organic American Kratom Nursery. As a U.S. kratom nursery we are focusing on growing kratom and advocacy. Our kratom co-op has a goal to help ensure American kratom as a main source for the United States. Each of our trees branches are pruned almost daily by our friendly staff.  We treat all of our kratom cuttings with the love and care they deserve.

Traveling across the USA with a Kratom Tree  – How We Process Unrooted Kratom Cuttings

Traveling across the USA with a Kratom Tree  – When we process our kratom cuttings we always follow the same process. First, we take the cutting off the tree and clean the nodes and extra leaf off of each cutting. It is important to note that kratom cuttings do not require leaf on the cutting to produce roots. In fact, having large leaf on a cutting can be  a disadvantage as leaf requires larger water consumption from the cutting. This is why we cut our leaf into a triangle shape.

The next step requires adding rooting hormone. We have found that the best way to ensure rooting is to use a lot of rooting hormone. As much as possible. We strive to ensure that each cutting has the highest success rate possible.  After adding rooting hormone the next step is to place the cutting in the soil medium. Weither it is peat pods, soil, or peet pods a good soil medium will be required to allow these plants to succeed. You can even grow these plants hydroponically, however we will be providing the rooting medium. If you are planning to grow hydroponically do add more rooting hormone after taking out of soil medium.

The Kratom Bible is also available here on the #kratomAPP

How high should the humidity be?

Traveling across the USA with a Kratom Tree  – Lastly, we add the cutting to a plastic Zip Lock like bag or you can take them out and put them into a very large plastic container. Regardless of how you are rooting them you need to ensure that the plants are kept in high humidity at all times. Do not leave the cuttings out of the bag for more then 20 min at a time. These plants require 80 – 100% humidity at all times.

How long should I expect Shipping to take?

Traveling across the USA with a Kratom Tree  – Unrooted kratom cuttings can be taken the same day they ship. All Kratom cuttings will only ship out Monday – Wednesday. Customers can select either 2 -day Priority USPS Mail or Expidited Shipping. Our friendly staff members will ship out your normally  by 2 pm. Each order will receive a notification and tracking number once the order goes out.

You can try the leaf from the trees your very cutting came from right now.

Setup instructions

It is important to note to make is: Do not grow these plants like other types of plants. For example these are not tomatoes and will not thrive in the same conditions tomatoes grow in. These Kratom cuttings are rain forest trees. Kratom trees require high heat, high humidity, and lots of water.

Please do your research and ask questions. A great resource to use is our #kratomAPP KratomWatchDog.

One of our customers  did a walk through on how to root kratom cuttings we recommend you check it out.

The Kratom Bible is also available here on the #kratomAPP

For best results inflate the ziplock bag and place it under a strong indirect light source. We get decent results just relying on a South facing window but, see much better results under some sort of bright indirect light (LED, Fluro, HPS).

Kratom Cuttings

Lighting Options

Artificial lighting methods allow for quicker rooting. However a South facing window will suffice.

The Kratom Bible is available here on the #kratomAPP

How often should I water unrooted kratom cuttings?

Customers should  leave the plastic bag these cuttings come in sealed at all times they should not be releasing moisture. There should be no need to water these cuttings. In the event the soil medium begins to firm up it is advised to mist or pour a table spoon or two of water. The soil medium should always be moist to the touch at all times. Even one night of a dried up soil medium will kill a plant seeing as they are so young.

What happens if there is a issue with my order?

We guarantee to get to your cuttings to your door healthy and green. But, sometimes things can happen. If there is ever a issue with your order please contact our team immediately. We ask that you  email us at kozykratom@gmail.com it is helpful if you also include a photo of the situation.

Kratom vein colors – Kratom Bible

Kratom Vein Colors

Kratom vein colors are a heavily talked about subject. We are aware there is a lot of misinformation on kratom vein colors and we hope to dispel some of the myths.

The Colors of Kratom vein colors
Kratom vein colors are generally divided into three different kratom vein colors. Red-vein, Green-vein or White-vein. The colors are determined by the color of the central vein of the leaf & the stem. If you look closely at a kratom leaf you will see that the central vein, as well as the stem, have a certain color. Generally, this color helps to determine the effect the kratom leaf will have. Each color causes a different effect due to their own unique alkaloid profiles.
The colors of the different kratom strains thrive at their best in differing conditions and contain various alkaloids that come together to form their own unique alkaloid profile which produces their own unique effect.

https://kratomwatchdog.com/topic/70/kratom-vein-colors/25

Red Vein Kratom
Red Vein Kratom leaves have red colored central vein & stem. The best selling and most widely available strain of kratom on the market. Red is sold more than the Green and White vein combined. The kratom plant grows abundantly in Southeast Asia and is slightly more persistent than other Mitragyna Speciosa trees. Some studies claim that the substances that give rise to the red color of the veins also ensure that the plant is less susceptible to external factors.

Vein colors

Red vein kratom from a trusted source is great for beginners because Reds are reported to be the most well-tolerated strains. Reds produce pleasant calming effects, pain relief & act as an anxiolytic as well as general peace of mind and a feeling of well-being and optimism. In addition, Red is suitable as a sleep aid for insomnia. Physically, Red is known to relax the body and relieve pain. It relaxes the muscles and can be used as a supplement or replacement for Rx painkillers.

Within the Red vein kratoms, there are considerable variations in the effects and properties. As with the Greens & Whites, the effects of a Red depend on the dose but overall Reds are used to alleviate pain, as an anxiolytic & sleep. Try some real American Red vein kratom leaf

Green Vein Kratom
Green Vein Kratom can best be described as ‘middle of the road’ or ‘the moderator’ because it is somewhere between Red veins & White veins. It is a mild energy booster with pain relief & mood enhancing.

People report that it helps them to enhance alertness and focus. Greens are more subtle than Reds or Whites. In general, they can be useful to alleviate pain and other discomforts, precisely because Greens do not lead to drowsiness, which is often caused by other analgesic supplements.
Greens can be mixed with Reds or Whites to create a more rounded flavor with a more sophisticated effect. When properly mixed it prevents the excessive relaxation of a Red and the overstimulation of a White.

Due to the balanced functioning Greens are often used for pain relief during the daytime as well as a mood uplift & social anxiety.  Try some real American green vein kratom leaf

White Vein Kratom
White vein kratom is known as a stimulant and positive mood enhancer. The effect of each strain off course depends on numerous factors such as the quality of the product, lifestyle and tolerance level of the individual. However, the trend is that Whites are the most stimulating. White kratom is increasingly taken instead of coffee (caffeine) for alertness, concentration, and mood uplift. Some take white kratom for increased concentration, motivation and stamina during long working days.

For those who experience gloomy periods or at times feel exhausted experience the best results when using this strain of kratom. It is advisable not to use this too late in the day as it can lead to problems sleeping. It is common to mix some White with a Red (or even a Green) in order to achieve a more balanced boost in energy.

Try some real American white vein kratom leaf

Red, Green or White kratom?
Which kind of kratom is most appropriate for you depends on your personal preferences and the situation you’re in. With kratom, this can be quite complicated because the effects can vary. It depends on quality, location, climate, harvesting method etc. Not all Reds will have the same results and this also applies to the Greens and Whites.

The characteristics described can best be considered as general guidelines for each kratom color. A great way to determine which kratom strain is best for you is to order kratom sample packs. By sampling different colors as well as strains you can find out for yourself what color and strain is most suitable for your needs.

Other Colors?
Yes, you will see and hear of other colors but these kratom vein colors are not determined by the kratom vein colors of the central vein & stem. I will leave these newer colors for someone else to contribute.

How do you collect Kratom Seed Pods?

Taking Fertile Kratom Seed pods off a American Kratom Tree And looking close up – Kratrom trees take years to mature. Because of this they can be quite tall making them hard to reach. A single kratom tree can grow to over two hundred foot tall.  Our dedicated team have had to make choices on the most efficient and effective way to bring them down. A big factor that plays out over time is how we grow the trees. If we top our taller trees they will start to bush out more near the bottom. However some of our trees are too tall to reach with a ladder. We have built a Kratom Seed Pod collector for this purpose.

Kratom Seed Pod Fertilization

Kratom seed pods from the nursery are confirmed to have at least 60% fertilization. One can assess this by the projections (pods) erupting from the circular flower bulb. These continue to grow until they are mature. Once kratom seed pods are ready to release seed, the kratom seed pod husk bursts open. Kratom seed are quite small and light. The seed will blow all over out of the kratom trees.

Taking Fertile Kratom Seed pods off a American Kratom Tree And looking close up – Bees and other insects are attracted to the pungent sweet smell of the kratom seed pods as they develop on the kratom trees. For that reason bees rub themselves on the stems of the exposed seed pods as they travel around the seed pod collecting the pollen in their fur as they go. While they travel from kratom tree to kratom tree the collected pollen rubs off onto the other seed pods that the bees land on. As a result this fertilizes the kratom seed pods.

On the other hand, each seed pods is to hand fertilize by staff. As well, a staff member will climb up on the ladder and grab what ever seed pods are close and rub them against each other. Turning them and spinning them in our hands to get the maximum effect. This ensures the viability of the seed pod.

Organic American Kratom Leaf is available here for purchase.

How to tell a fertile seed pod?

Taking Fertile Kratom Seed pods off a American Kratom Tree And looking close up – Each Kratom seed pods also have very distinct difference between a fertile seed pod and a inftertile pod. Fertile kratom seed pods will be plump in contrast to infertile pod that are smooth and round. For that reason,  make sure to be careful if you want a full pod to stay intact as they break apart from the center very easily. Most notably, this video shows every stage of a kratom seed pod.

Lastly, a infertile kratom seed pods are completely round and are very very tiny. They will almost look like a honeycomb in a ball. Infertile kratom seed pods are very soft and will roll around in the hand. In contrast, there is not much that can be done with these pods. Here is a short video to show you what they look like.

Unfortunately taking a little longer than we originally anticipated but that’s our fault. They don’t work on our time.

In the meantime we posted a documented breakdown of the still ripening pods on our website.

The last step of the process is the browning of the pods, and the eventual bursting of the husks.
Our goal is to capture the seedpods just as the husks begin to burst open. Here is some pictures from last season of what you will expect to receive once we pull the pods from the branches,

Kratom Rooting Stages

This is the first stage of root development. White tissue appears on the stem. At the beggingin of rooting I thought it was important to take the cutting at the node, but it appears that is actually better to take it from the stem.

Kratom Rooting Stages – The last and most exciting stage is prominent root development. This occurs around 21 days after applying the rooting hormone.

By the end root growth is pretty much enormous. Almost all of our rooted cuttings now need to be repotted. We will be documenting and doing a write up on that process for next week. If you would like to us to cover a specific question or area in detail please let us know.

All of these plants were rooted in a light box with a Fluorescent 500watt light.

Kratom Pod Seed Breakdown

We are working on a follow up video for this series Kratom Pod Seed Breakdown. However we wanted to make this available as soon as possible for our subscribers, and other cultivators in general. The circular pods shown in the video are completely infertile. They do not contain any protruding pods, but do contain what I term “fake seed”. We do not ship this seed material, and we hope no one else does either. For whatever reason these seeds  were not fertilized and literally die on the tree.

Here is a video we put together to show you the break down

For this break down we need a fertilized pod. Such as this. These pods are still ripening on the tree.

Now we need to break the pods off of the seed ball.

The next step is carefully crushing, and slicing the pods open. Revealing single strands of hair like seeds. This is your fertilized Kratom pods seed. These get even even fatter as the pods ripen on the tree.

Here is a comparison shot. You can see the difference in the size, curvature, and coloring of the hair like seed and the nu

The final seed pod will look closer to this.

Stay tuned for our video, and future videos where we sow the seed, and track the seedlings development.
